DESCRIPTION OF CLINICAL PRACTICE
In our truest nature, all of us know what is wise action and our suffering comes from not being in touch with who we really are beneath the structures of our personalities and issues. When we are not blocked from our authentic feelings and desires, life becomes an ongoing flow of experience. Therapy is investigating these blocks, reclaiming this essential self. It is waking up from the nightmare.
Couples move into a dance with each other, which can be nourishing or destructive. The original romance phase often turns into a power struggle, where each partner is trying to make the other into the person into the one they want them to be. Couples therapy is about each partner taking ownership of their role in this dance and changing the dance to make it a loving expression of connection. The cauldron of relationship becomes a vehicle for learning how to open the heart.
I had had some contact with spiritual practices in the 60s and 70s, but wasn't interested in following any sort of path until 1977, when I was persuaded to go to a weekend vipassana workshop. I took to it like the proverbial fish to water. I sit daily, started doing retreats in 1981, and still go to Spirit Rock twice a year. I have also been the teacher for a weekly sitting group for many years. I have been a member of the Ridhwan School, also called Diamond Heart since 1991. It has been my other path, as important as the path of dharma, guiding me to find my authentic self and the freedom it entails.
RELEVANT CLINICAL TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
After getting degrees in Physics and Math in a previous lifetime, I wised up and started to become a therapist in 1973. I graduated from John F. Kennedy University in 1978 and became licensed in 1981. My need to be as good a therapist as I can be has led me to take all kinds of trainings, including Gestalt Therapy, EMDR, Non-Violent Communication (really useful for couples), and much more. At age 77, I have piled up a certain amount of wisdom to share with my clients.
